Meet Dr Nerica Ramsundhar
Dr Nerica Ramsundhar is a neurodevelopmental and general paediatrician practising at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban. She holds the distinction of being the first clinically trained and HPCSA-certified developmental paediatrician in KwaZulu-Natal — a milestone that reflects both her expertise and her commitment to a field that changes children’s lives.
Developmental paediatrics is a sub-specialty of paediatrics that focuses on the conditions affecting a child’s developmental trajectory and behaviour. It is, in many ways, the medicine of potential: understanding how a child learns, communicates, moves and relates, and removing the obstacles that stand in the way of their growth.
Training and Expertise
Dr Ramsundhar trained under the guidelines of neurodevelopmental paediatricians and paediatric neurologists at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, one of the foremost children’s hospitals on the continent.
In her diagnostic work she draws on internationally recognised, evidence-based tools — including the ADOS, Griffiths and Molteno assessments and the DSM criteria — to build a careful, accurate picture of each child. Her particular clinical passions are autism and ADHD, areas in which she combines deep knowledge with warmth.
A Trans-Disciplinary Approach
Dr Ramsundhar’s practice is built on individualised care delivered through a trans-disciplinary approach. In practice, this means she does not work in isolation: she brings together therapists, psychologists, educators and fellow specialists so that every aspect of your child’s development is supported in a coordinated, joined-up way. Care is comprehensive, considered and always centred on your child.
CORE VALUES
A Voice for Neurodiversity
Beyond the consulting room, Dr Ramsundhar is a passionate advocate for educating and raising awareness about neurodiversity. She has presented and chaired at national and international platforms, and she believes deeply that understanding and celebrating different ways of thinking benefits not only individual children but society as a whole.
